Jennifer Hudson and Taylor Swift…we need to talk.
The Cats trailer is here and it's as horrifying as we all expected. They're people ... but they're also cats.
Earlier this week, a featurette dropped that prepared audiences for a film experience unlike any they've ever seen before, extolling the new technology created to give the cats of Cats hides of "digital fur." In the original Broadway musical, performers were dressed as cats with painted faces and patterned leotards. But in the film, Taylor Swift and Rebel Wilson play human-shaped cats (but they're still cat-sized, with the sets scaled to be larger than life) covered in fur with creepy faces harvested straight from the uncanny valley. If you thought The Lion King looked weird ... girl, you are not prepared for the Cats trailer. I fully thought it was fake when I started watching but ... it's very real.
I know I've said this many times in many articles but ... electric chair. To everyone involved, including Andrew Lloyd Weber.
Alongside Swift and Wilson, Cats boats an eclectic and somehow very talented cast including Jennifer Hudson (Grizabella), Judi Dench (Old Deuteronomy), Steven McRae (Skimbleshanks), Ian McKellen (Gus), Jason Derulo (Rum Tum Tugger), and Idris Elba (Macavity). James Corden is in there, too ... I don't want to talk about it. The film is also outfitted with some impressive dancers, who will hopefully distract from everything going on with Judi Dench's face. God, I just watched it again and I still can't believe it's real.
Cats is in theaters Christmas day. Meow.
