Disney just released the colorful first trailer for their upcoming animated film Encanto, about a magical family in Colombia, and it stars one of our bisexual faves!
Every member of the Madrigal family is gifted with powers like control over plants, shape-shifting, super strength, and animal control. But Mirabel, voiced by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star and certified bi icon Stephanie Beatriz, has no gift.
According to Variety, when Mirabel "discovers that her family's magic might be under threat, she realizes that she is the only one who can save it." This sounds terrific!
Encanto is directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, and co-directed and co-written by Charise Castro Smith, a Cuban-American playwright. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music.
The trailer also has a few other queerish moments. One of the Madrigals is a woman with super strength and huge muscles, an instant lesbian icon. Another seemed to be a young boy with shapeshifting powers who shifts into the form of other family members regardless of their gender. These are the kind of superpowers queers love to see!
Beatriz recently starred as Carla, the lesbian partner of Daniela (Daphne Rubin-Vega), the salon owner in the film version of Miranda's musical In The Heights. Her character wasn't gay in the original stage musical but was made to be in a relationship with Daniela in the film.
"I layered that in as much as I could, especially if Daniela is talking," she said about her performance in the film. She made sure that her character was "enraptured, glued, like it's a master class, just watching it all unfold, watching Daniela's personality take over the space of a room and the ambiance."
Beatriz isn't the first bisexual woman to star in a Disney animated film. Last year, Auli'i Cravalho, the star of Moana (which also featured music by Miranda), came out as bisexual on TikTok. We're always here for more bisexual movie stars!
You can watch Beatriz as Mirabel and meet the entire Madrigal family when Encanto is released in theaters November 24.
