Janelle Monáe and Tessa Thompson Get ‘Screwed’ in New Music Video
Now ask yourself: who’s screwing you?
Straight people might have been jamming to "The Middle" or whatever Taylor Swift single was making its rounds last summer, but if you were gay, the song of the summer was undoubtedly Janelle Monae's "Screwed," featuring Big Little Lies star Zoe Kravitz. "Screwed" is the anthem of sexual empowerment we were desperately waiting for, and of course the Q.U.E.E.N. would be the one who delivered it. The song, off Monae's Best of 2018 album Dirty Computer, was nominated for two Grammys and carries a striking message about sex: "Everything is sex, except sex, which is power. You know power is just sex, you screw me, and I'll screw you too... now ask yourself who's screwing you."
Really makes you think, huh?
But "Screwed" was too powerful and, after all, we are now living in 20BiTeen, and Monae is one of our greatest bicons (Monae came out as pansexual last year, but "Make Me Feel" was the most bisexual music video we've ever seen). On Monday, Monae released a music video for "Screwed" that continues the narrative of her previous Dirty Computer videos, co-starring Monae's rumored real life girlfriend, Men in Black star Tessa Thompson (who has said that she and Monae "love each other deeply"). While Kravitz doesn't appear in the video (maybe she's too busy preparing for Big Little Lies season two), it's still a visual feast, full of strikingly colorful looks, a political agenda, drones, secret government agents, and more.
Dirty Computer is nominated for Album of the Year at the 2019 Grammys, while "Pynk" has been nominated for Best Music Video. Monae has previously been nominated for six Grammys but has never won. Could this be her year? 20BiTeen says yes!
