Cheryl Furjanic's documentary, Back on Board: Greg Louganis, about the life of the legendary Olympic diver, received the Audience Award at Outfest and a standing ovation during June's Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco. "It has been deeply moving to see audience members touched by the film -- especially gay men who are close to Greg's age," Furjanic (left) says. "Many of them lost partners and friends to AIDS, and many have been living with AIDS for decades."
Filmmaker Nancy Kates's documentary, Regarding Susan Sontag, premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, where it received a Special Jury Citation. Like Sontag, arguably the 20th century's most glamorous public intellectual, Kates (right) enjoyed pursuits that weren't purely cerebral. "My festival circuit highlights included going on some nice dates at Frameline that led to a lovely new relationship, and a proposal of marriage from an audience member -- a stranger -- at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival." The lowlight: "Sleeping on a cot in a dining room at a festival in Norway."
