Celebrities are raising funds with "Can’t Cancel Pride."
You "Can't Cancel Pride," LGBTQ+ celebrities like Billy Porter, Melissa Etheridge, Ricky Martin, Adam Lambert, Big Freedia, Billy Porter, Katy Perry, Kim Petras, and Sia are telling the world with a new virtual fundraiser.
Hosted by Laverne Cox and iHeartRadio's Elvis Duran, the one-hour special will raise visibility and funds for members of the LGBTQ+ community impacted by the health crisis. It is produced by iHeartMedia and Procter & Gamble.
LGBTQ+ people are at increased risk for being overtly impacted by virus due to factors like systemic hurdles in health care, exacerbated by the Trump administration's recent move to kill protections for transgender people in the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, the pandemic has put on a strain on LGBTQ+ clinics due to redirected health resources. There's also the surge in unemployment and housing insecurity, which disproportionately impacts marginalized people.
The benefit will shine a light on some of these issues and has set a fundraising goal of $5 million to support organizations that are addressing them. The Greater Cincinnati Foundation will help distribute the funds to a list of groups that includes GLAAD, SAGE, The Trevor Project, the National Black Justice Coalition, CenterLink, and OutRight Action International.
"The [pandemic] has exposed the complex and significant obstacles facing the LGBTQ+ community," said Marc Pritchard, Procter & Gamble's chief brand officer. "We must continue to fight hate and intolerance against all people while redoubling our efforts to elevate LGBTQ+ visibility and providing support for those in need."
"Now is a time we need to come together to support the organizations that help bring critical resources to LGBTQ people in need and Can't Cancel Pride aims to do just that," said Gayle Troberman, iHeartMedia's chief marketing officer. "Like always, Pride will continue to represent the resilience, beauty and strength of the LGBTQ+ community around the nation and the globe."
Can't Cancel Pride will stream Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 9 p.m. local time on iHeartRadio's Facebook and Instagram and PrideRadio.com. It will also be broadcast on the iHeartMedia stations and app. Donate at CantCancelPride.com or text "RAINBOW" to 56512.
