But his heart was back home with his family.
World champion diver Tom Daley added two more gold medals to his career collection with his recent victories at the FINA World Cup competition taking place in Tokyo, Japan. Daley bested the competition in the 10m platform and also the synchronized 10m dive with Matty Lee at the test event for the Olympics later this summer also in Tokyo. Despite the wins, though, OutSports reported the champion's thoughts after emerging victorious from the pool were clearly on his husband, Dustin Lance Black, and their young son, Robbie, who were watching the competition back home in London.
"Hello, Robbie, if you're watching!" Daley said after he won the individual gold with a back three-and-a-half somersault dive which earned a score of 104.40 points from the judges.
Daley was happy to return to competition and was pleased with his performance but said he still needed to keep working and improving.
"We haven't been able to compete for a long time, so it's been great to have this competition in the Olympic venue," Daley told the BBC. "Looking back, I think it's been a solid performance. Yes, there are some things I need to work on but overall I'm really happy."
Daley has competed at the international level for the United Kingdom since he was a young teen. He's won bronze twice at the Olympic Games and has 11 World Championship gold medals as well. He plans on representing the UK again this summer at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Daley came out in 2013 not long after he and Black started dating. Both men were successful in their careers when they met, with Black having netted the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his work on the 2009 film Milk. The pair had a fairy book wedding in 2017, but the proposal story is just as heartwarming (and sexy!). The pair welcomed son Robbie Ray into their family through surrogacy in 2018.
The athlete recently revealed how difficult it was to leave Black and especially their son Robbie in his latest vlog, saying "I cried so much. It really hit me. Oh my God, I'm not going to see him for 20 days."
While parting was more sorry than sweet for the champion father, at least he knows Dad Tom is bringing home the gold to London, meaning his budding acting career is on hold at least temporarily.
