Video game developers Behavior Interactive just announced that their popular title, Dead by Daylight, will now have its first-ever LGBTQ+ playable character: David King.

"As the world of [Dead by Daylight] widened, it was integral to ensure that our growing cast of characters was representative of our vast and diverse community, all of whom have stories of their own," the Canadian gaming studio wrote in an official statement. "One of the cornerstones of that community are our LGBTQIA2+ players, who continue to elevate Dead by Daylight with their tireless passion for horror, gaming, and of course - horror gaming. The fact that our character roster did not openly feature any confirmed LGBTQIA2+ representation was something we have been determined to change."

As a result, the studio announced that fan-favorite David King is now an openly gay character in the game. David is one of 30 survivors featured in Dead by Daylight and was first introduced in "Chapter V: A Lullaby for the Dark" back in 2017.

The potential queerness within David had already been clocked by numerous gaymers and fan-fiction writers over the years. In fact, many fan-fiction enthusiasts have written stories exploring a romantic dynamic between David King and Jake Park. Thus, the studio is basically listening to its audience and making David canonically gay in the game now.

Specifically, David's sexuality will be a key storyline in the game's newest Tome: Devotion.

"With DEVOTION comes another memory from David King's life before he was taken by The Entity," the release from Behavior continued. "In 'The Importance of Being King,' gain a deeper insight into a new side of David's character, one that explores a deep personal connection and expands the scope of his backstory."
