The new promo promises more Crystal Gem drama.
After Steven Universe: The Movie pushed the titular Steven and the Crystal Gems into the future, we've been wondering what the next project, Steven Universe Future, would look like. Now, we've got a first look at the epilogue season of the cult classic, queer-friendly series.
On Monday, Cartoon Network dropped the second sneak peek of Steven Universe Future, which features all of your favorite characters as well as some new faces. "Life is a little different these days," narrates Steven in the promo clip. "We're all safe to explore our dreams...soon, we'll all be able to put the past behind us" But it quickly becomes clear that leaving the past behind isn't going to be quite so easy.
In September, Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar -- who came out as nonbinary last year -- told TVLine that the movie was "not the end" of the series. "There is more," she said."That's all I can say at the moment, but there will be more, and everything that happened up to this point will continue to matter in true Steven Universe fashion." At New York City Comic Con in October, the officially announced Future and debuted the first glimpse of the show.
Steven Universeisn't just beloved because of its commitment to including queer characters, it's also earned quite a few accolades. In 2018, it was given a Peabody Award for children's programming, with the Peabody Board noting that the show's representation of empathy as "perhaps the most important superpower" is "something our real-world human society needs now more than ever." Steven Universe has also been nominated for five Emmys, and each season has received 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
