On your mark, get set, WED!

David Atherton, who won the 10th season of Great British Bake Off last year has even more great news to share, as he announced on Instagram that he and boyfriend Nik Sariyski are now engaged! Congratulations to the happy couple!

The handsome and obviously overjoyed couple shared a post from Bulgaria, where Sariyski is from, of the two of them with huge smiles on their faces and rings on their fingers. "We put a ring on it," Atherton wrote, "It didn't fit, but I measured my own finger badly with a tape measure.. Not to be advised."

"I'm not sure I actually asked the question because I was basically crying so much," hr continued. "I didn't have a plan B so I'm glad he said yes." The two were dating at the time of the baker's win.

"This moment is especially special because it seems so surreal," Atherton wrote, "Growing up both Nik and I didn't think we'd ever be able to legally and publicly celebrate our commitment." In an interview with Attitude last year, the 38 year old baker said that he didn't come out to his family until he was 29, and that Sariyski is his first partner that he's introduced to his family. "My family is quite religious, and Nik was brought up in Bulgaria, which is a very homophobic country," he told the magazine.

The GBBO winner also shared a message of hope and solidarity to others who grew up or are living in similar situations. "We need to keep fighting for all those living in places where this isn't possible or where there is hostility," he said, "Love wins."

Atherton was the first ever baker to win the show after never having won the title of Star Baker. His first cookbook, aptly titled My First Cookbook is out this year. "The smiles on our faces say it all," said Atherton, and the only thing we have to add is that we wish him and Nik a lifetime of happy marriage.
