Coming fresh off of his win at this year's Tony Awards for Best Play, out playwright and The Inheritance writer Matthew Lopez is set to make his directorial film debut with an upcoming adaption of the popular queer YA novel Red, White & Royal Blue for Amazon Studios, with Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon) and Sarah Schechter set as producers.
The book, by author Casey McQuiston, centers on Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the U.S. who needs to do damage control after a tabloid situation with the Royal Prince Henry of England forces them to stage a fake friendship. But this friendship quickly develops into something more than either of them saw coming. In the midst of a star-crossed romance and Alex's mother's re-election campaign, it begs the question: can love save the world after all?
Lopez, the first person of Latin descent to win the Tony for best play, has a full plate on his schedule as he's also set to pen a remake of the 1992 Whitney Houston starrer The Bodyguard, which will have a Latina protagonist. He's also scripting a feature film adaptation of the novel Leading Men, which centers on the relationship between playwright Tennessee Williams and his longtime partner Frank Merlo.
Details on casting and when production is supposed to start haven't been revealed yet, but we can't wait for this queer on-screen romance to melt our hearts!
