The president of Brazil is facing harsh criticism after tweeting a video of two men having public sex during Carnival as a way to "expose the truth" about what happens during the annual festival.
On Tuesday, far-right president Jair Bolsonaro shared a video of two men dancing atop a platform during Carnival. One of the men penetrates himself before bending over to let the other man urinate in his hair.
"I don't feel comfortable showing it, but we have to expose the truth so the population can be aware and always set their priorities," Bolsonaro wrote alongside the video. "This is what many street carnival groups have become in Brazil."
Bolsonaro has a history of making homophobic and racist remarks -- in a 2013 interview with gay journalist Stephen Fry he claimed that "homosexual fundamentalists" brainwashed children to "become gays and lesbians to satisfy them sexually in the future." Bolsonaro also said that "Brazilian society doesn't like homosexuals,"
"Yes, I'm homophobic - and very proud of it," he once said.
Before his inauguration, Amnesty International's Erika Guevara-Rosas said that Bolsonaro "has campaigned with an openly anti-human-rights agenda and frequently made discriminatory statements about different groups of society...His election as Brazil's president could pose a huge risk to Indigenous Peoples and quilombolas, traditional rural communities, LGBTI people, black youth, women, activists and civil society organisations, if his rhetoric is transformed in public policy."
Bolsonaro also tweeted Tuesday that Brazilian culture has been "destroyed by decades of governments with a socialist slant." And yet many Brazilians feel that Brazilian culture is being destroyed by Bolsonaro.
"He is a fascist, but he is also a failure the likes of which we have never seen in the history of our country," tweeted Brazilian anthropologist Rosana Pinheiro-Machado.
Hours after his initial tweet, Bolsonaro had a follow up question. "O que e golden shower?"
