Kelechi’s ‘Romance Pop’ Is What Your Playlist Needs Right Now

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" may be slaying the charts, but don't be so quick to choose your song of the summer just yet!

With a last-minute entry, singer Kelechi released his latest single "Forever Tonight" on Friday, the video of which you can watch exclusively below. And if I do say so myself, it's giving good pop-soul vibes that might be perfect for a cool summer twirl.

"I make romance pop music," Kelechi told Out ahead of the release about his style of music. "I want people to fall in love with the feeling they get when they listen. As a queer Black artist, I want my art to speak for itself. But I also want my music to be unexpected."

"I write songs I feel I could play and sing over and over and over again," he said, "essentially songs to sing in the bathroom mirror. There's a sense of nostalgia there, the feeling of dancing like nobody's watching and singing like no one else is in the room, but you."

Of the video for "Forever Tonight," which has an upbeat, idyllic sound, Kelechi said he "wanted to create a visual that conveyed the beauty of falling in love," where "each setting and each frame was themed to evoke a strong sense of romance and intrigue." Director Taylor James achieved just that with a simplistically vintage set (designed by Ves Phillippi) that allows Kelechi and his dancer-models (Devin Walker, Mason Cutler, Casey Askew, Ty Chen, Ben Fernandez, and Julian Horne) to shine effortlessly.
