The happy pair told People that their daughter, Ruby Mae Stewart Xargay, was born August 9 via surrogacy, just one day after Stewart helped Team USA take home the gold medal for women's basketball at this year's Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

"Ruby's arrival has been the best part of 2021 and easily one of the best moments of my life," Stewart told People. "Becoming a mom is bigger than anything else that I've done and I look forward to every beautiful and challenging moment as a family of three."

The day before Ruby Mae Stewart Xargay was born, her mother Stewart had a dominating performance in helping Team USA defeat Team Japan for the gold medal in women's basketball. Stewart scored a double-double, with 14 points and 14 rebounds. She also added 5 assists and 4 steals.

The pair announced they were engaged in May, and were married the next month. Stewart, who plays in the WNBA with the Seattle Storm, proposed to Xargay while the two were out for a hike in the hills above Phoenix, Arizona. Xargay had played for the Phoenix Mercury before deciding to focus more on European league play. She was completely caught off guard with her defenses down when Stewart got down on bended knee to propose. Xargay quickly accepted, of course.

Stewart and Xargay started dating in 2019, the same night Stewart suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a game. The injury has ended the professional careers of many an athlete, and many doubted if the WNBA star could recover and make a comeback.

At the time Stewart wrote the injury was "still a shock" to her, but viewed it as "just another obstacle that I will overcome. I'm thankful that I have so many people in my corner to help me every step of the way. I'm feeling every emotion possible at this point but just know that the bounce back will be real and I'll be back better than ever."

Luckily for Stewart, Xargay was there with her while she recovered from the surgery and endured the painful rehabilitation. She came back better than ever with some help from her friends.
Stewart later said it was during this period of rehab and recovery that she decided to have a baby via gestational surrogacy.

Stewart and Xargay are the subject of a short documentary producer by TOGETHXR and Bleacher Report. They revealed there was a slight disagreement of the middle name for Ruby Mae. Stewart wanted to name her Ruby Tokyo in honor of the recent gold medal experience, but Xargay nixed that saying they don't use middle names in Spain. They settled on naming their daughter Ruby Mae while Stewart gets to name their future dog Tokyo instead.
